For my fiftieth Friday Flashback I picked this bucolic photo from the small village of Hay-on-Wye. One of the highlights from my fall 2018 3-week trip to the UK was my visit to Hay. Located on the England/Wales border (but decidedly in Wales as I was reminded on more than one occasion), this is the original “booktown,” a concept created in the 1960s by a local bookseller looking to provide a hook to return Hay to greatness. While the number of bookstores in town has fallen to around 20 from it’s original 35-40, the town is still strongly bookish and some of the stores are really impressive (more photos coming soon).
