San Diego Comic-Con is looming large in some of our lives, and I will once again be presenting a Tales From My Spinner Rack LIVE! panel. This year’s topic is “1975: Kirby Returns to Marvel,” and I’ll be teaming up with Kirby experts Mark Evanier (author, Kirby King of Comics) and John Morrow, editor-publisher of Jack Kirby Collector magazine to discuss this momentous and somewhat difficult time in the artist’s life.
In his final three-year stint at the company he helped make famous in the 1960s, Jack Kirby wrote and drew old favorites like Captain America and Black Panther, while creating new characters The Eternals, Devil Dinosaur, and Machine Man, the latter a spin-off from Kirby’s 2001: A Space Odyssey continuation series. He also contributed to Marvel’s yearly calendars from 1975 through 1978, and ended his career with the company on the highly-anticipated Silver Surfer graphic novel, his last collaboration with Stan Lee (and inker Joe Sinnott). We’ll delve into how Kirby’s ‘70s stint at Marvel was regarded by both fans and company staff, and offer a glimpse at the King’s career in his final years, after he left Marvel.
I know a lot of you won’t be able to attend Comic-Con, so here’s a sneak peek at the panel.
