Yep, Comic-Con is right around the corner (July 23-26, with Preview Night on July 22, at the San Diego Convention Center) and both Tales From My Spinner Rack! and I will be front-and-center (sorta) once again!
“The Stories Behind Cover Story: Six Decades of Comic-Con” • Comic-Con Museum • Wednesday, July 22, 10:30 AM
First off for me, it’s a special Members Only presentation (and no, you don’t need the 1980s jacket) at the Comic-Con Museum on Wednesday, July 22 at 10:30 AM, as I discuss Comic-Con’s amazing history of Souvenir Book covers with “The Stories Behind Cover Story: Six Decades of Comic-Con.” Based on the exhibit currently on display at the Museum, this graphics-filled presentation will include all the Souvenir Book covers from 1970 through 2025, with a special emphasis on the 14 books that I edited and designed from 2007 through 2020. They’ll be lots of exclusive art—preliminary sketches and ideas, color roughs, pencils and inks—that are not featured in the exhibit, plus the stories on how the covers were created, and what it was like working with some of the greatest artists in comics. Meanwhile … at Comic-Con, Tales From My Spinner Rack LIVE! returns on Thursday, July 23 at 11:00 AM in Room 9, with a panel discussion called “1975: Kirby Returns to Marvel!” Joining me for another graphics-filled presentation will be Kirby experts Mark Evanier (author, Kirby: King of Comics) and John Morrow (editor-publisher, Jack Kirby Collector), to discuss Jack Kirby’s final stint at Marvel, which included Captain America, Black Panther, and new creations 2001, The Eternals, Devil Dinosaur, and Machine Man. John Morrow will also discuss his upcoming book, MarvelMation: Jack Kirby’s Final Act in Comics and Animation.
