This photo is from one of my first trips to California. Once upon a time, all of the Los Angeles area was dotted with outdoor newsstands. Some were big, like World News in Hollywood (which was partially indoors), and some were smaller affairs. There were a lot more magazines back then, and visiting these newsstands—often open to the wee hours—was always a treat.
This one was in Santa Monica on the Third Street Promenade and very atmospheric at night … almost noirish. I’m afraid I was filter-crazy in my early days on Instagram, hence the weird coloring. But despite that, I still really like this photo.

I fondly remember when Marquard’s was a newstand and magazine (and cigar and liquor) store in San Francisco. By the time I took this photo in 2011, it had become a Lids hats store.
