Tales From My Spinner Rack Episode 28 Now Available! …

PSST! … Tales From My Spinner Rack fans, I’ve been keeping a secret from you. Before I got my comic book spinner rack, I had another, “secret” spinner rack, this one dedicated to paperback books. Episode 28 reveals the story behind that other rack, the one devoted to my James Bond vintage paperback collection! Welcome to “The Art of James Bond Paperbacks.”

I’ve been a huge James Bond fan since I first saw Goldfinger in my hometown theater in spring 1965, when I was just 9 years old. But before that happened, I was aware of British agent 007 from a stack of paperback books kept next to my grandfather’s favorite chair, one of which was From Russia With Love, featuring a somewhat strange cover format from publisher Signet/New American Library: It featured a big IAN FLEMING on the cover, a tiny illustration, with the book’s title below it, and “A James Bond Thriller” running down the right side. This trade dress was ubiquitous in the early to mid-1960s in the U.S. and something that jumped out at me every time I visited my local newsstand. As the world went crazy for James Bond, some of these Signet editions went into 20+ printings!

As I grew older, I became obsessed with Fleming’s adventures of the world’s greatest super-spy and amassed a small but fascinating collection of vintage 007 paperbacks, starting with the earliest editions from Pan Books in England (with great painted covers), and continuing with the first American editions (I’m sure we can all agree that You Asked for It! is NOT a better title than Casino Royale, but hey … those crazy U.S. publishers!), and carrying over to more recent Bond book series releases by Penguin Books and The Folio Society.

Join me as I take you through my collection of Bond paperbacks by creator Ian Fleming, book by book, cover by cover—including my favorites—in this art-filled episode, called “The Art of James Bond Paperbacks,” and answer the question, “How many copies of Casino Royale do you need?” … in this brand new episode of Tales From My Spinner Rack!
