“WONDER TOT SAVE YOU! The Impossible Tale of the Wonder Woman Family” is episode 18 of Tales From My Spinner Rack! with a look back at that wonder of a woman, Wonder Woman, and her 1960s run of comics featuring her “Family:” Wonder Queen, Wonder Girl, and the Amazing Amazon toddler known as Wonder Tot!
Wonder Woman’s Silver Age run by writer-editor Robert Kanigher and artists Ross Andru and Mike Esposito lasted 80 issues from the late 1950s until 1968. These are some of DC’s wonkiest stories of the time—which is saying a lot, since it was the era of science fiction Batman, Go-Go Checks, and misguided reboots of some of the company’s beloved characters. Wonder Woman herself was the victim of one of those reboots, turning her into super-powerless, karate-chopping Diana Prince, inspired by British TV’s Emma Peel from The Avengers (no, not those Avengers!), a surprise mid-‘60s hit on American television.
In this video, we cover the creation of the character in the Golden Age of Comics by psychologist William Moulton Marston and artist Harry G. Peter, through the Silver Age and the Wonder Woman Family era, on to the brief return of the Golden Age look, and a peek at the Diana Prince era. Along the way, you’ll learn about one of DC Comics’ most prolific creators, Robert Kanigher, an overlooked writer-editor who created numerous characters and features for the company, including overseeing the “Big Five” war comics for many years, and co-creator of Sgt. Rock, Enemy Ace, the Unknown Soldier, and many more, often with Wonder Woman artists Ross Andru and Mike Esposito.
Plus, we take a look at the origins of Wonder Girl and Wonder Tot and what separates the Amazonian toddler from her other DC kiddie counterpart, Superbaby.
