We’re back with our third big Tales From My Spinner Rack! video on our official YouTube channel (not counting our teaser video)! This time, we’re presenting a re-creation of my Comic-Con 2023 panel presentation, featuring a look at two of DC Comics’ most popular titles from the 1950s and 1960s, Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen and Superman’s Girl Friend Lois Lane, in a little ditty I like to call “Jimmy and Lois: Still Crazy After All These Years!”

In this video you’ll learn how the Adventures of Superman TV series spawned two new superhero titles for DC in the 1950s, featuring the Man of Steel, and the popular characters from that show, Jimmy Olsen (played by Jack Larson) and Lois Lane (played by Noel Neill, after a first season portrayal by Phyllis Coates). The Jimmy and Lois comic book series definitely played up the humorous aspect of the characters, with both characters getting themselves into outrageous—and often times silly—situations from which only Superman could rescue them.

Plus we take a close look at two of my favorite stories: “The Wolf-Man of Metropolis!” from Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #44 and “The Monster Who Loved Lois Lane!” from Superman’s Girl Friend Lois Lane #54.

You’ll also learn the secrets of DC Comics covers of the era, plus the failed marketing attempt known as “Go-Go Checks,” a graphic device so absurd it could only be thought up by an aging publishing executive totally out of tune with his comic book buying audience. It’s 38 minutes or so of comics history, hopefully produced with equal amounts of nostalgia and humor … but I’ll let you decide that.
So … here’s the video. Incidentally, If you follow me on YouTube, you’ll get to see the videos I post a day or so in advance of my official announcement here on my blog … so go ahead and click that video above and travel over to YouTube and follow and like me there. Leave a comment, too … but be nice!
Next time: We’re going to take some time off in November, but we hope to be back in December with two more Tales From My Spinner Rack! posts to wind up the year! And look for photos from my archives every Saturday, throughout the month of November.
