London 2016 • Photo Set #5: Tower of London and Sky Garden …

There are probably no more disparate tourist attractions in London than the Tower of London and the Sky Garden. One is the intense history of the city, preserved for the ages, the other is so brand-spanking-new it almost smells of fresh paint. I visited both the Tower (the historical heart of the city) and Sky Garden, at the top of what is known locally as the “Walkie-Talkie Building,” due to its unusual curve, on the same day.

The Tower of London is, of course, a must-see attraction if you visit this amazing city. But I would also include Sky Garden in that category. It’s free … you just have to book in advance (I suggest about 10-14 days), or make a reservation at one of the restaurants. If you take the free route, you can only stay for an hour (supposedly … I didn’t see anybody kicking anybody out), but you can buy refreshments, if you like. The view is breathtaking from the 35th floor, and I recommend timing your visit to sunset, as I did. Usual disclaimer: If you don’t like heights, Sky Garden is NOT for you!

London 2016 • Photo Set #4: Southwark …

During my 2 week trip to London, I stayed in what’s known as Southwark, on the south side of the Thames. It’s also called Bankside and South Bank, but I was right off Southwark Street, so for the purposes of this short set, I’m going to call it Southwark (which, by the way, is pronounced Suth-awk, sorta. Kinda.). Most of these photos were taken on the first Sunday I was in town, a mostly-grey, cold day, where I walked along the southern side of the Thames to Westminster Bridge and crossed it to get a better look at the iconic Big Ben at the Houses of Parliament and the Churchill statue near there.

Special thanks to the seagull who did repeated passes in front of my camera until I snapped the perfect in-flight photo (above). The check is in the mail.

London 2016 • Photo Set #3: Notting Hill …

My third Photo Set from my London 2016 visit features pics from Notting Hill, one of my favorite places to visit and roam around in the city, especially on a Saturday when the antiques market (along with produce and other things) is up and running. While I’m not big on crowds–and this is certainly crowded each Saturday–it’s still a lot of fun to walk and look (and occasionally buy). I also love the houses in NH and their picturesque paint jobs. I don’t know what they’re like inside, but outside they’re strikingly colorful.

London 2016 • Photo Set #2: Christmas …

My second London photo set from my visit Nov. 23rd through Dec. 8th focuses on Christmas decorations around the city. (Click here to see my first Photo Set.) I purposely scheduled my trip for this time of year just to see and enjoy the holiday in London, and I wasn’t disappointed. I visited Covent Garden (the photos with the big silver, disco ball-like objects), Regent Street, the Tower of London, Bankside, Southwark, and the area around City Hall (the big blue tree). I hope my photos give you a taste of what they city looks like at Christmas, and man … do the Brits love their Christmas! From “Christmas sandwiches” to all-out decorations all over the place, London was certainly rockin’ the holiday!

Merry Christmas to all!

London 2016 • Photo Set #01 …

I spent 2 whole wonderful weeks in London from Nov. 23rd through Dec. 8th. It was the longest vacation of my life and each day was a new discovery as I explored this amazing city, its museums and bookstores, and just walked my feet off (over 125 miles in those 2 weeks!). While I can’t say anything good about British “cuisine” (when you have to send back fish and chips, there’s something wrong), I can’t say enough about this beautiful, incredibly photogenic city.

Over the next few days I’ll be chronicling my trip there through photos (check the comments for more info on each pic). One of my favorite vacation experiences these days is taking pictures with my iPhone 7 and sharing them on Instagram, Facebook and on here, too.
