As some of you may have noticed, this here blog looks a little bit different. I’m experimenting with both a new look and a new outlook on blogging, one that will—hopefully—bring me back to the very reason I started this online thing way back in 2003 or so: Writing. I love writing. I love the interplay and juxtaposition of words, the expression of feelings and thoughts. It’s something I hope to do much more of in 2021 … I guess we’ll see how successful I am. But in the meantime …
Fuck you 2020. I’m sure that’s how many of us feel. I’m one of the lucky ones. I have—so far—avoided COVID and actually prospered, at least a little bit, from the enforced isolation of this horrible year. The only thing I missed was travel to some of my favorite places (London, NYC, Portland, and Seattle, to name most of them) and the company of friends.
The stay-at-home protocols of the last 9 months or so made it easier for me to see what my future may hold. Retirement has loomed large in my mind for the past few years, and being alone most of the time with a reduced workload allowed me to see what this could possibly look like: how to fill my days, what to do, where to go (although that’s a bit limited right now) and how to figure out living in a new paradigm. It hasn’t been easy or a whole lot of fun, but I think I’ve figured it out.
So bring on 2021. I welcome the challenge with a new phase in my life … a chance to reinvent myself one last time and profit from the years behind me. I hope you’ll follow me on this journey and see what happens next.
Happy New Year.
