Friday Flashback #30 …

A stunning (if I do say so myself) shot of the Oculus in New York City, a newish shopping and transit center built under the site of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. It’s an awe-inspiring place, considering what was there before. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes it shows both the resilience and perseverance of New Yorkers (although one could argue a shopping center isn’t exactly a monument to what happened there on Sept. 11th, 2001 … but there is a more appropriate memorial nearby). Still, it is something worth seeing if you find yourself in the Big Apple. I heartily recommend it (and that and 5 bucks will get you a soy-milk grande latte at Starbucks.)

Friday Flashback #029 …

You have to look close to notice the subtle nod to Comic-Con, which is going on right now at the San Diego Convention Center. This shot, taken last year at the event from inside the Convention Center restaurant, shows a “superhero” walking by the window (note the flowing cape). I have had the extreme honor of working for Comic-Con for the last (almost) 2 decades now. It’s been a blast and I can’t believe my good fortune to be involved with my 19th show as an employee, and my 27th consecutive show (!) as an attendee.

Friday Flashback #028 …

A dramatic shot of some tiles dodging the sunlight through some palm trees in Little Italy. I love this section of San Diego, in easy walking distance from my workplace downtown. I sometimes “escape” there for lunch at one of my favorite places and maybe take a few minutes to roam through the art supply store too, even though I don’t count myself as much of an artist anymore. I wouldn’t mind living in Little Italy if I was maybe a couple of decades younger, but it’s a little bit too loud and busy for me these days, so an hour-long lunch is just enough, thank you very much.

Friday Flashback #027 …

Back to San Diego and my new hometown of Coronado. I’m coming up on a year (already!) of living here and my love for this small town style of life (adjacent to a big city) has only grown. I took a walk up into the village the other day and it was one of those times that inspired that “I still can’t believe I live here” feeling. I’m so glad I took the plunge and changed my life. Above is the world-famous Hotel del Coronado at Christmas time. Yes, I know it’s not “seasonally-appropriate,” but living here is like Christmas most days anyway, at least for me.
