A few weeks ago, in my role as a bitter “winter” recluse, I watched The ABC Murders on Amazon Prime. This new BBC adaptation of the Agatha Christie book follows Hercule Poirot’s pursuit of a serial killer who is using the ABC Railway Guide as his blueprint for murder. He first kills Alice Ascher in Aberdeen, followed by Betty Bernard in Bexhill, and so on, and also signs his taunting letters to Poirot “A.B.C.” Pretty sure this new adaptation starring John Malkovich and Rupert Grint has been kinked up a bit from staid, old Agatha Christie’s novel, but it’s enjoyable nonetheless. • But as it turns out, there really was such a thing as The ABC Railway Guide, and through the wonders of eBay I now have one in my possession. This over 900-page tome (published monthly, if you can imagine), is a timetable for trains all across England, but it’s also a time capsule of hotel ads circa September 1962, with over 200 pages of the book devoted to largely pictorial ads of where to stay. • I’m more fascinated by these ads than the train info ( but who wouldn’t want to visit Newbiggin-By-The-Sea or Lossiemouth?).
