Welcome to 52 Weeks of 007, the 2019 edition. This is a weekly look (every Wednesday) at vintage (and some contemporary) James Bond book covers. We’ll be looking at the original Bond books by creator Ian Fleming, mainly through paperback editions. Books will be presented in chronological order, one title at a time. • This a recent acquisition from a friend who was cleaning out her late husband’s collection, and I’m very grateful to her for thinking of me and remembering that both her husband and I were huge Bond fans and that he would want me to have this (more on this in a minute). It’s the program book from Thunderball, probably picked up by her husband as a kid at one of the larger New York City theaters where he grew up. It’s seen some better days, but it has great art by both Robert McGinnis (front cover) and Frank McCarthy (both back cover images, including that remarkable Bond/jetpack piece). • On a personal note: Batton Lash was a cartoonist, storyteller, fount of comics, movie, and TV knowledge, and just an all-around great guy. We both grew up in the same 1960s era, he being a couple of years older than me, and from the much more worldly world of New York. I know this was probably one of his treasured items, carrying it with him all his life, including a move from Brooklyn to San Diego when he married Jackie Estrada. Bat sadly lost his fight with brain cancer earlier this year and he’s sorely missed by a lot of us who enjoyed his work, his company, his kindness, and his sense of humor.
